Understanding Mental Health : Men, Childhood Trauma & the Silent Struggle: From Survival to Connection

11/12/2026  •  7: 00 pm

About the Session

What happens when boys learn to survive instead of express? This presentation explores the hidden impact of childhood emotional neglect and trauma on men, from the Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn responses to overwork, substance use, isolation, and difficulty asking for help. Learn practical, male-friendly strategies for building emotional awareness, nervous-system regulation, trust, and connection—and discover how we can move from surviving alone to healing together.

Why Attend?

  • This presentation explores the often-hidden connection between childhood emotional neglect, trauma, nervous-system responses, and men’s mental health. It examines how early experiences can shape adult coping patterns such as anger, perfectionism, overworking, avoidance, substance use, emotional shutdown, and social isolation. Participants will learn how to recognize these patterns, understand the survival logic behind them, and use practical, trauma-informed approaches to support regulation, connection, and healing.

Key Takeaways

  • Learning Objectives:
  • 1. Recognize how childhood emotional neglect and adverse childhood experiences can influence men’s emotional development, coping patterns, and adult mental health.
  • 2. Identify the Fight, Flight, Freeze, and Fawn responses and understand how they may appear in men through anger, control, overworking, withdrawal, procrastination, people-pleasing, or self-numbing.
  • 3. Understand barriers to help-seeking, including shame, emotional vocabulary, social conditioning, fear of appearing weak, time and financial barriers, privacy concerns, and limited male-friendly supports.
  • 4. Apply practical strategies such as grounding, breathing, movement, emotional awareness, motivational interviewing, CBT, attachment-based approaches, and structured skill-building to support regulation and recovery.
  • 5. Build more effective and compassionate relationships by prioritizing respect, autonomy, safety, connection, and validation—helping move men from survival-based coping toward repair and healing.
